Why does this matter?

Links sometimes contain share identifiers, referral information, or advertising campaign labels. Removing unnecessary parameters reduces the information that travels with the link. It does not prevent the destination website from collecting data through cookies, your account, your IP address, or other methods.

How do tracking parameters work?

In a URL, the text after ? contains query parameters, usually written as key=value. Some help the website display the right content, such as YouTube's t=120 (start at two minutes). Others describe how someone reached or shared a link, such as utm_source or X's s. CleanLink generally keeps useful navigation information while removing unnecessary tracking and share metadata. For YouTube watch pages, only the video ID (v) is preserved; timestamps, playlists, and all other parameters are intentionally removed. Some parameters have undocumented meanings, so explanations distinguish established uses from informed interpretations. A parameter can reflect how a link was generated without identifying the original author. Unknown query keys are preserved to avoid breaking links. Short links may redirect and contain additional tracking that cannot be inspected locally.
